Apple Cider Donuts
Apple Cider Donuts, the perfect sweet treat for Fall, and even better with naturally sweetened dough and beef tallow for frying! This is my healthier take on a really great fall treat that we all love!
Apple cider donuts are everywhere this time of year! They are at every apple orchard or pumpkin patch and they are really so good. My kids love them as a special treat and requested them one day. So, I figured I would try them, and of course, sweeten them with maple syrup instead of refined sugar!
They are just as sweet, just as crispy, and just as fluffy as the ones you find out and about this time of year. The spices in these donuts are so warming and comforting.
Give these a try! I promise they are totally worth it. Let us know what you think in the comments!
Details & Tips
This dough is a cake donut dough. The consistency is going to be wet, like a cake batter. As much as you might want to add more flour, do not do it!! I have done this before and they consistency will not be as light when fried. The best way to get the batter into the oil is with a small ice cream scoop.
Using a good oil to fry is also key to a healthier donut. Use a high quality avocado oil or beef tallow. My favorite is beef tallow from Dutch Meadows or Lineage.
This donut batter is naturally sweetened with maple syrup and apple cider. Find my homemade recipe here. If you add in a glaze or cinnamon sugar crust, they obviously will have refined sugar. I think these donuts are great without, but even adding the glaze or sugar is not a big deal! Just do the best you can!
Customize
You can substitute the maple syrup for cane sugar. You will get a really similar texture in dough either way.
You can chill the dough and cut out the donuts into traditional circle shapes or squares.
Prepping and Storing the Donuts
The donut dough can be prepped ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Prep it the night before so it is ready to go in the morning.
These donuts are best served fresh, but they will store well on the counter for a day or two. But I promise you, they will not last that long! They will be gone in the blink of an eye!
