Garden Update

May 29, 2025

Hi Everyone! I am so excited to share a little update with you from our garden! I snapped some quick photos on my phone along the way.

While I wish I could say it is all done a beautiful, it isn't, but that is okay! Our goal was to get the boxes done and filled with dirt and then do a nice rock all around the boxes, but it is still a work in progress. Kollin has been so busy with work, we have barely seen him, let alone him get much done around our house. We are blessed that he is busy with his business so we aren't complaining one bit. We are just taking what comes and getting done what we can!

I really love how Kollin built the boxes climbing down the hill. It looks so nice and really breaks up the space. I was nervous about it at first but he had a plan and I just kind of went with it. I am so glad I did because I really do love it!

Where I get my plants and seeds!

For the last couple of years, I have ordered all of my seeds through Burpee.com. They offer seeds and plants for most fruits and vegetables. They also offer a lot of different flower seeds.

This year, I ordered more plants for tomatoes, peppers, and strawberries. I am excited to give them a try and see how they come. I will definitely let you know!

Last year, I ordered rose bushes from them and they came packaged up so well with easy instructions on how to plant them into the ground. It was so easy the bushes have done really well.

What I love about Burpee is they use non-gmo and organic practices for their fruits and vegetables. They have a really wide variety so I am able to find everything I need in one place. And most of all, their seeds always do really well when planted. I have always had really great luck with their seeds and plants. I cannot recommend them enough. They also send a seed catalog at the start of the year and it is my girls' most favorite thing to look through! We sit and pick out everything we want to plant that year and it has become something I look forward to each year!

What we have planted so far!

So far, we haven't planted much. We have lots on our list to still plant, but we will get to it within the next week.

Strawberries

So far, we have one box that is completely dedicated to strawberries! The girls love strawberries and so I figured we could use a bunch. I am still trying to figure out what I can do with strawberries once we have a full crop of them! But it will be fun to see the girls watch them grow and develop their favorite fruit!

The strawberries came in a pack of 25 roots we spaced them out and added a little bit of Burpee's Organic Seed Starting Mix. I find mine at Walmart! We simply followed the instructions and we have 14 that are greening up! Mae did pull two out so we are down those, but I am really impressed with 14 coming up. Strawberries run so I am hoping in a couple of years, we will have a box full of strawberries!

Our first little strawberry bud!

Raspberries

I ordered 5 raspberry bushes as well. These came as a stick with roots. We planted these with a little potting mix as well. They really haven't done much but we do have a little bit of a leaf coming up. I am really hoping these pull through. I have no idea what to expect with these so we will see! We planted these in the ground, on the edge of the garden area. I am hoping that as they grow, they will become a nice boarder.

Is this part of the raspberry plant or a weed? We are unsure..

Flowers

My mother-in-law gave the girls packets of flower seeds for Easter so we have another bed completed dedicated to flowers! We have some mixes of zinnias and then some other seeds from Burpee that we are excited to have pop up. They are cut flowers so I think they girls will love to see them grow and bloom and then eventually make flower arrangements! They planted these themselves so we have some clusters of seeds and it is just the sweetest thing ever.

These clusters of flowers coming up make me smile!

Goals for this year's garden!

The first thing we still need to do is get the beds completed and filled with dirt. We have peppers and tomatoes coming next week that will go in those. I ordered all sorts of different varieties so I am so excited to get those in the ground.

I also plan to plant some herbs, specifically dill, cilantro, parsley, and thyme. I also want to put in a couple lavender plants!

We are hoping to get the ground around the beds rocked this fall. I want to use the smaller river rock, I think. Kollin knows more about this so he will be the expert.

We have an open area where our old garden was, so I am planning to plant some watermelon, cantaloupe, pumpkins, and cucumbers. We have a lot of work to do with the area so my fingers are crossed that we can get this done this weekend! I feel a little behind on these things but that is okay.

We still have a lot to do, but progress is progress!

Lastly, we really hope to get a nicer set up for our garden hose, and maybe install some drip lines to put into the beds. That might not happen this year, but it is definitely a goal. The dream is to put up a garden shed near the space that can be a catch all for all of the supplies and also serve as a greenhouse to start out own seeds, but we are taking baby steps with that.

We are in such a busy season of life right now with three girls, three years old and younger, Kollin's business really taking off, and just lots of life we are trying to live in the cracks of time we have. The garden is a place for us to slow down and just enjoy what we have. It is always amazing to see the beauty in growing plants and flowers and taking that food into our kitchen to make our own recipes.

We will be sharing so man garden fresh recipes later this year, and I am really looking forward to it! Hopefully you follow along for the ride! I have mostly no idea what I am doing, so I will definitely be sharing tips and what I have learned along the way!
