Homemade Graham Crackers
Sweet, salty, and so so good! These graham crackers are the perfect snack for anyone! They are naturally sweetened with honey, no refined sugar added!
Today was a dreary winter day here in the Midwest. We had freezing rain all day, it was cloudy and cold. The sky was gray, even the grass, trees, and pond looked gray. These days are great for snuggling up by the fireplace and drinking an extra cup of coffee! We get a little restless on these days too. When Mae asked if we could make a recipe, I thought it would be the perfect day to test, once again, a graham cracker that is naturally sweetened.

We whipped up the mixture, let it rest in the fridge during nap time, and then started cutting the crackers. Half way through, Mae had the great idea to cut out little shapes instead of the traditional cracker size. So we stood at the counter for a couple hours cutting out bunny, star, heart, and flower shapes and it was such a great way to fill this wintery day. And the cherry on top, she told me they are better than the graham crackers we get at the store!
Details and Tips!
These are fun to make, but they do take some time. This is one of those things where they are so satisfying to make and such a healthier option for a snack! The time doesn't come from mixing up the dough, it is more about cutting out the shapes.
Now, I don't blame you if you don't want to cut out dozens of shapes and bake them, but these are just as good in big cracker form. You really cannot go wrong.
The combination of whole wheat flour and all purpose flour will give you the perfect toothiness that you get with a graham cracker. They will be a little thicker than store bought graham crackers, but they are made with real ingredients!
If you think about it, take the time to get all of your ingredients to room temperature. Everything will mix together so much more evenly!
What you need!
- all purpose flour
- whole wheat flour
- salt - I used gray salt
- cinnamon
- nutmeg
- baking powder
- baking soda
- unsalted butter, room temperature
- honey
- molasses
- heavy cream, room temperature

Customize!
There isn't a lot of customize here but there is always a way to shake it up! You can definitely add some chocolate chips to the batter for some added sweetness and fun. They will bake up just the same. You could also use some sprinkles!

Homemade Graham Crackers
These homemade graham crackers are the perfect snack and so fun to make! They are sweet, a little salty, and so satisfying!
- 1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 tsp salt (I used gray salt)
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 3/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
- 1/3 cup honey
- 1 tbsp molasses
- 1/2 cup heavy cream (room temperature)
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients and set aside.
- In a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or using a hand mixer, mix the butter, honey, and molasses until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
- Starting and ending with the dry ingredients alternate adding in the dry ingredients and heavy cream. So it would be adding in 1/3 dry ingredients, 1/2 of the cream, another 1/3 of the dry ingredients, the rest of the cream, and then the rest of the dry ingredients, making sure each is mixed in before adding the next.
- Separate the dough into two disks and refrigerate for 2 hours, but up to 24 hours.
- When you’re ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Roll out the dough until it is about 1/6th of an inch thick. You can go thinner or thicker depending on your preference. Cut into whatever shapes you would like. Using a fork or a wooden skewer, poke holes in the crackers. Bake for about 12 minutes for a medium sized cracker. If using smaller shapes, start checking for doneness at 9 minutes. The edges will be golden brown and the crackers will be firm.
These will keep in an air tight container for up to two weeks, although they never last that long around here! They also freeze well! Have fun with the shapes and sizes and make them your own!
